JUHANA KARLSSON - DRUMS

Date of birth: 10.6.1983

Equipment: Pearl drums (Reference), Sabian cymbals (AAX), Aquarian drumheads

I’ve been playing drums for way over ten years now and I can say hands down that it’s the most fun instrument ever! I like it when you can indulge in the music with every limb of your body, and the drumkit is by far the best means for that. I’ve been playing fast & technical stuff as well as groovy & laid-back material over the years, and playing in Shear offers a nice balance between all those styles – I’ve been given free hands to show off some technical skills in certain parts, but when it comes to a poppy chorus I just need to provide a solid beat and stay in the background.

As far as influences go it can be anything: a certain feeling, a book that I read or a song that I hear. I listen to a wide variety of music: hip-hop, electronic, metal, jazz, pop... everything really. I think it’s important for a musician to be open-minded and to be able to draw influences from one genre of music and make use of it in a whole different setting. Drumming-wise, my number one influence would be Jojo Mayer. He has found some really cool ways to make use of his amazing technical abilities, and always in a very musical way. That’s something I’m striving for as well!
